New military divorce rate figures released for 2012

As readers of our Glendora family law blog may be aware, figures were released throughout 2012 showing the military divorce rate as being at an all-time high. However, statistics from the Pentagon recently showed that the military divorce rate decreased to 3.5% last year. This is just a slight decrease from 3.7% in 2011.

The small decrease in military divorce filings leaves experts hesitant to label it a trend. A researcher who studies military divorce says the decrease may be the result of several things. The rate of deployment slowed in 2012 due to fewer military conflicts. In addition, the improving economy may be relieving financial stresses on family units.

Other figures from the Pentagon shed additional light on military divorce filings. The highest rate of divorce is among Marines and enlisted female soldiers. The divorce rate among these service members is 9.3% and 9.4%. The divorce rate among female enlisted servicewomen in the Army is also more than triple that of enlisted servicemen.

Despite the slight decline in overall military divorce filings, divorce among American servicemen and servicewomen continues to occur on a regular basis. A military divorce involves all the same issues as a civilian divorce. Couples are faced with dividing marital property and debts. This can be complicated, however, by issues such as division of military benefits and pensions. If a couple has children, items such as child custody, visitation and child support must be addressed. These issues can also be more complex among military personnel, especially those on active duty. For these reasons, it’s important to enlist the help an experienced California family law attorney to assist with your military divorce.
